Hoopla stall doing brisk business at the "statty" fair on the Square. The right to hold an annual fair in the autumn is guaranteed by statute but the venue was neverthless shifted in the 1960s to what was then the Sainsbury's car park. The crowds had been spilling dangerously into the traffic on the main road. The original purpose of the fair was to hire servants and farm labourers.
